Rick Benjamin was the fifth poet laureate of the American State of Rhode Island from 2013 to 2017. Benjamin left to accept a teaching position at the University of California, Santa Barbara. On Monday, Rick will read “The Quiet World” and engage with students about topics relevant to the poem and current times.

Benjamin’s resume is stacked. Besides UCSB, he has also taught at Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, the MFA Program in Interdisciplinary Arts at Goddard College, as well as in community & assisted living centers. He has published three books of poetry: Passing Love (Wolf Ridge Press: San Francisco. 2010), Floating World (Wolf Ridge Press: 2013) and Endless Distances (Lawrence & Crane Publications: Houston. 2015), and a fourth book, Some Bodies in the Grief Bed, is forthcoming from Homebound Publications (CT) in the summer of 2020.

Benjamin believes that poetry can play a primary role in building community. All of his courses & workshops involve participants in some form of community practice— in schools, community & elder centers, juvenile detention facilities & elsewhere.
