The deserts of Coachella Valley have come to life, and the hills of San Francisco are gearing up for festival season! Whether you’re recovering from Coachella weekend 2 or preparing for Stagecoach, Lollapalooza, or our local gem Shabang, I’d like to offer my words of wisdom as a concert and festival connoisseur to survive the heat and enjoy the music! Class is officially in session for Festival 101!
Tip 1: Comfort over Cuteness
Festivals have become the ultimate runway for influencers and brand partnerships. But here’s the hard truth: the last thing you want is to miss your favorite artist’s set because you needed a break from your painful outfit. Take it from me – I’ve cried in the pit of a Harry Styles show from pain, not happiness. If you’re planning to serve looks at your next fest, pack these essentials:
- Lightweight Tops – the more breathable, the better, especially for summer festivals!
- Comfortable Bottoms – whether it’s a skirt, shorts, or your go-to jeans, make sure they’re perfect for dancing!
- Lightweight jacket – compact enough to fit in a festival-sized bag or around your waist when the city or desert chill kicks in.
- Comfy shoes – festival grounds are no joke. I recommend:
- Steve Madden boots for the fashionistas,
- Tennis shoes for campsite wanderers,
- Or if you’re brave, a solid pair of supportive sandals.
Tip 2: Plan Out Your Set Times
A few days before your music festival begins, organizers usually release set times and stage locations. Plan ahead! Coordinate with your group – whether by sharing a notes document or in your festival group chat – prioritize compromising with your group and choosing your top artists for the day! Service and phone usage is ROUGH at any music festival or concert, my top recommendation is screenshooting or printing copies of performers’ set times and location to always be prepared. Set alarms or calendar notifications to always ensure you’re on time for the next performer’s set so you’ll never miss the best music!
Tip 3: Never Leave A Friend Behind
Music festivals stretch across acres and acres, and losing someone in a crowd is easier than you’d think. Whether you split off to catch a different artist or get separated in the mosh pit, always stick with a buddy. If the buddy system happens to flop, consider finding a common meeting space like the restroom or a food tent to meet up with lost friends. Trust me – tracking down a lost friend in a sea of thousands takes more time than you’d expect, that’s time better spent vibing to your favorite performers.
Tip 4: Pack Smart
Carrying items throughout a festival can sometimes be a nuisance, but it can also be a game-changer. Festivals allow bags that follow these specific size guidelines (clear bags that are 12”x6”x12” are common). Consider my festival checklist:
- Portable Charger
- Small Wallet – containing your ID and cash – avoid bills over $20
- Sunscreen – reapply every 90 minutes
- Hand Sanitizer
- Pain Relievers – Tylenol and Band-Aids
- Protein Bars – festival food is pricey, always pack snacks
- Makeup Touch-Ups – lip combo + pressed powder for a quick refresh
- Mini Fan – in unbearable heat, this is a must-have
- Wet Wipes and Toilet Paper – you’ll thank me later.
Tip 5: Prioritize Yourself Over The Music
When you’re at a music festival like Coachella or Lollapalooza, for the weather can reach up to 100 degrees, it’s OKAY to say you’re NOT OKAY! Never be afraid to ask for water, food, or even a moment to just take a seat during the festival. Here are some rules to always follow to make sure you’re always at your best during a festival…
- HYDRATE HYDRATE AND HYDRATE! Dehydration is no joke. I’ve seen way too many people faint because they skipped water. Drink at least 40 oz of water the night before and the morning of. If your festival allows, bring a bottle of water! If your festival allows, bring a 2L empty water bottle as well as packets of liquid IV to enter campgrounds!
- Get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before – your future self will thank you.
- Remember to eat! These rules might sound basic, but you’ll never believe how many people forget to eat a full breakfast! Alongside hydration, enjoying a heavy and filling breakfast can prevent injuries and ensure you’re ready for the day!
Tip 6: Have Fun
Let loose! Sing at the top of your lungs, dance your heart away, and soak in every second of your favorite artist’s set. You didn’t buy a ticket to stand still – make the memories you came for.
If you’re heading to a festival soon, keep these tips in mind. They might sound simple, but they make all the difference when it comes to surviving and thriving at your next show! Have fun, be safe, and party smart!
